When you’re BORED … !!!
This 11 year old definitely has worked the problem from all – if not most – angles. Nandini Ganesh offers her suggestions … parents, take note.
People like me don’t know how to stay still. Especially when I have no choice but to stay inside the house and occupy myself. In Singapore, there are plenty of things to do outdoors, but occupying yourself in your own home is a tough one because you can’t repeatedly play the same game or read the same book.
Here are some things that you can do if you are in my situation:
A book is one thing that will never leave your side. Sometimes books are your only friend. They take you to a whole new level of
excitement and interest. I personally keep this at the top of my what-to-do-when-I’m-bored list, and I recommend it to you as well.
Exercise and Play
You know its good for you, so why not try it out? You can make this fun, like when I add play to my exercise list. This can include swimming, hitting some hoops with your friends and plenty of things outdoors.
This is something that is guaranteed to make you happy. Even a simple board game will make you smile. Call up Grandma on the phone and ask how she’s doing. Watch old videos, look through the moments that you cherish; it will pull you and your family closer each and every time.
You shouldn’t be doing this all the time. I’m sure you’ve heard that it isn’t good for your eyes. But I have to say, it feels good to just lie down on the couch, switching between my favourite channels. It is probably the reward I deserve after a long, tiring day.
Mastering the Arts
This category is probably the biggest one on this list. This includes performing arts like dance, music, in some cases martial arts, and more. Then there are just normal arts. These cannot really be performed, but they are as interesting and useful as performing ones. These arts, such as drawing, photography, craft, etc. can be great to do when you are bored. Just sit in a quiet corner of the room.
Visual arts can help you release stress and make you feel happy, especially when it is a hobby that you love.
Walk the Dog
If you have a pet, then play with him/her. It’s always good to show your affection to your loved ones, including your little companion. Introduce them to new things. It will be a great experience for you as for them.
If you don’t have a pet, maybe talking to your family about getting one will be a good idea.
This is also something that comes to my mind whenever I’m bored especially as me and my family are foodies. We love it when new food comes to the table. Sometimes it’s best to just bake grandma’s old recipe of pound cake and eat it with your family. Also, there are some amazing recipes on the internet. And it’s not only the food, it’s also the process. It’s so much fun when its just me and my Mom going to the supermarket, gossiping and grabbing things from the aisle as we walk.
As I am doing now, writing it a great way to just let all your ideas spill onto a piece of paper. It can be about anything – an argument, recipes, tips to survive high school, how-to’s, stories about your life … I can go on and on.
And the best way to become a writer is to just keep on writing, and sometimes read as well, to get ideas and tips from other professionals.
SingaporeforKids has loads of ideas on what to do and where to go when the kids are bored. These are categorised by personality and interest, both indoors and out, so its easy to identify options in the shortest time possible.
