Calling bird lovers … Aabha Hattangadi visits a very ‘local’, uniquely Singaporean experience in Serangoon.

If you are a bird owner or simply enjoy being around birds, Serangoon North Avenue 2, Block 151 is the place to be.

There is a corner, well-known, well-loved, where bird owners gather daily to interact with one another. Their birds are displayed in cages hung close to each other and the melodious chirping of the birds as they communicate with one another fills the air, giving it a collegial, congenial atmosphere for pets and owners.

At this place of convention, people from all walks of life with a shared interest in birds socialise with one another. Bird competitions are held on several occasions throughout the year. Whether you are a resident or a tourist you are welcome to visit, watch and listen and experience the shared joy and delight that birds offer to anyone willing to listen.

If you are a bird lover and long for a winged friend of your own, head to 154 Serangoon North Avenue 1 – a bird shop not far from this locationIf you are a pet owner and would like to buy supplies for your pet, a pet mart conveniently located at 151 Serangoon North Avenue 2, offers a wide range of products for various kinds of pets.

Keep in mind :

  • This gathering occurs daily, however it is not attended by many on weekdays. Weekends are the best times to see a variety of birds and interact with their owners.
  • The best time to visit is late morning or afternoon, when most people and birds convene.

A bird-singing competition is held in the area every couple of months for birds like the thrush, shama, merbak jambul and mata puteh, attracting bird owners from across Singapore.

The area also has many stores selling small animals such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and chinchillas, as well as aquarium fish and pet supplies. It also has veterinary clinics and pet-grooming shops.
