The Live Turtle and Tortoise Museum is the passion of one family, passed down from father to daughter. A visit is more than just a collection of reptiles; it is a true learning experience.
They were first housed in the backyard of their home, then in a shophouse, then transferred to the Chinese Gardens and today they have been relocated to the leisure park Orto (the former Bottle Tree Park) in Yishun @ #01, 81 Lor Chencharu, Singapore 769198.
Beginning as family pets from as far back as 1976, there are now more than 40 species, including radiated tortoises from Madagascar, alligator snapping turtles from North America, soft-shelled turtles from India, pig-nosed turtles and red-eared slider terrapins. While some were pets, others were abandoned by collectors after Singapore joined the international convention in 1986 to ban the import and export of endangered species. The oldest among them is believed to be over 80 years old.
Experience the mystery of the river turtle, the awesome power of the Alligator turtle and the majestic beauty of the Radiated tortoise. Feel the spirit of the Sulcata Tortoise (for luck) and the Thailand Golden Temple Turtle (for wealth), observe the Golden Terrapin and the Six Legged Tortoise. Listen to the lonely noise of the Indian Star Tortoise, marvel at the strange looking Soft Shell Turtle from India. Be entertained by the funny antics of Terrapin and Soft Shells roaming freely through the park. Pet and hand feed some of them.
Volunteers required to help out, including cleaning tanks and general maintenance of premises.
