Tales of Sang Kancil

October 8, 2021 - March 31, 2022

An online interactive workshop and theatre performance.

Sang Kancil is a small and clever mousedeer who uses its wit and intelligence to triumph over creatures more powerful than itself in the animal kingdom. The Tales of Sang Kancil is a compilation of folktales for children, based on adventures of Sang Kancil in the Malay world.

The programme (a performance video and two traditional dance workshop videos), designed for children between 4 to 8 years, touches on various art forms and introduces traditional Malay musical instruments. It combines elements from Indian Dance (e.g. Bharatanatyam) and Malay Dance (e.g. Inang and Zapin) to depict characters in the forest.

A ticket permits three access times to:

  • One traditional arts performance (pre-recorded video) – Tales of Sang Kancil, approximately 25 minutes.
    • Performed by professional musicians and dancers from Era Dance Theatre Ltd and Maya Dance Theatre Ltd.
  • Two traditional dance workshops (pre-recorded video links) of 20 minute duration each.
    • 1)  Dancing Anklets – A Bharatanatyam Dance workshop, approximately 15 minutes
    • It takes children into the magical world of Indian dance, a fun-filled journey to understand gestural language. Children will learn to identify different animals and movements that depict nature – flowers, stream, trees, etc.
    • 2)  Mari MenariLet’s Dance workshop, approximately 15 minutes.
    • It introduces basic Malay dance; the inang movements incorporate some familiar gestures like the tumpang lalu (to make way) and petik bunga (picking flowers).
