Singapore Biennale 2019
November 22, 2019 - March 22, 2020
Every Step in the Right Direction : this theme and focus on sustainable, self-renewing change, inspires everyone to take a step – the right step – in the right direction.
Children are sponges, open to ideas, change, thinking, perspectives. Exposure to thoughtful art, to visual expressions and differing/new perspectives is an education in itself, an investment in their future; because by emphasising the importance of making choices and taking steps for change and betterment, it encourages them to think.
The Singapore Biennale 2019 explores potential of art (and its understanding) to rework the world, and features the work of over 70 artists from Singapore, Southeast Asia and beyond.
In a global state of troubling change, what is the role of art, the artist, and the audience ? What is the responsibility of the artwork, its making and its experience as it might influence future action?
The Biennale’s invites you to explore the city of Singapore through site-specific and new commissions that highlight the catalytic role ‘hope’ plays in pushing for change, and to be inspired in this exploration with moments of moving forward, looking back, turning inward, venturing outward … reflecting, accepting new perspectives and considering pasts.
No main venue, rather, the Biennale will be spread over 10 places mostly in the Civic District, the National Gallery of Singapore and the AsianCivilisations Museum.
Patrick Flores, Artistic Director of this Biennale believes that every effort to change the world for the better matters and sees this trove of curated art as a re-thinking of the condition of failure and the chance at transformation with steps taken based on decisions made about the right direction.
