Hrdaya – HeartStrings
August 16 - August 17
Poetry, puppets and painting put to music re-tell the story of Sir Stamford Raffles and the birth of Singapore.
Named for the Sanskrit word which means heart, the show begins with Sir Stamford Raffles first arrives in Singapore and envisions its future as a trading hub. It unfolds with wayang kulit shadow puppetry, the recital of poems (Kahlil Gibran, Rabindranath Tagore, Langston Hughes, William Blake) and is accompanied by a live orchestra of 30 musicians performing an original score that combines Indian classical music (both Hindustani and Carnatic) with Western arrangements.
This ensemble production transcends time and emotion through a multitude of art forms supported by a collection of music scores. Hrdaya explores themes of beauty, wonderment, love, disappointment and hope – seeking parallels from Temasek then to Singapore today. With visual enhancements – shadow puppetry, live narrators and poets – and an interactive multi-genre orchestral ensemble, Hrdaya engages the aural and visual senses.
