Geylang Serai Hari Raya Light-up 2019
May 3 - June 16
A visual feast of close to 50 light installations that ‘celebrate the kampung spirit’.
Ramadan is a time for family and friends, a celebrationsof culture and traditions, an opportunity for community bonding in a multi-racial society. The beloved Bazaar Raya Geylang Serai returns with over 500 stalls offering an abundance of traditional and contemporary items.
Beyond the lights and bustling bazaar, visitors can learn more about the Malay culture through a shared sense of affinity and belonging through the different community activities that take place through the month. Locals and overseas visitors enjoy a rich cultural experience that gives a better appreciation of the Malay heritage in Singapore.
A Grand Entrance
Stretching 1.8km along Changi Road, Geylang Road and Sims Avenue, close to 50 light installations light the way to Geylang Serai.
The first main arch along Sims Avenue is a mosque with golden domes surrounded by full blooms symbolising a new beginning and renewed bonds of friendship and kinship. During Ramadan, Muslims congregate in the mosques to perform taraweeh, a special prayer recited only during the holy month.
Another arch along Changi Road reflects the façade of a kampung house – signifying communal life, and family and friends from different racial and religious groups coming together to celebrate Hari Raya Puasa with love and joy – accompanied by the gendang, a traditional Malay drum. Suspended above is the symbol of Islam, a crescent moon and star.
The sub-arches feature the crescent moon and star as the centerpiece, accompanied by full blooms in batik floral prints and geometric patterns. The main stage area is at located at Wisma Geylang Serai, where the official light-up and weekly cultural programmes take place. A kaleidoscopic star-shaped installation guides visitors at night along Onan Road.
Celebrating the kampung spirit with communal iftar sessions and ketupathon
To encourage the gotong royong spirit, multiple iftar (breaking the fast) sessions, bring residents and other members of the community together for a meal at sunset. Wisma Geylang Serai offers a communal space for families and friends to gather for their iftar.
A ketupathon session, on 2 June 2019, has participants weaving ketupat shells over 12 hours. The session rounds off with an auction, the proceeds from which will go to charity.
